The key items to know are that the IMAP server is found at imap.gmail.com, the SMTP gateway is smtp.gmail.com, the username is YourUserName@gmail.com, and SSL is supported for secure connections.

Try setting your language to English (US) - in gmail prefs. Mine was on English (UK). As soon as I changed it I was able to have access to IMAP

For me it was a matter of being patient. IMAP4 was turned on for my account the day after I wrote this blog item. Works great.
