Xdrive: 5GB Free Online Storage With Backup
Unlike Inbox.com's free 5GB of online storage that does not include backups unless you upgrade to the reasonably priced for-fee service,
...provides 5GB of free online storage with backups (but no email feature). Xdrive also provides a Microsoft Windows utility to allow the ability to drag and drop files between Microsoft Windows folders and your Xdrive folder.
I had an account with Xdrive during the first dot-com boom. They provided, I believe, around 100MB of free space back then. Then, they changed their model to fee-only and dropped the free service. I seem to recall being a paying customer for a while before dropping the service. I have not tried this dot-com 2.0 free Xdrive service yet.
UPDATE: I didn't realize it when I originally posted this info that Xdrive is now owned by AOL.

Listen up Xdrive
Listen up Xdrive Consumers....! XDMOlson is going to hook you all up with the easiest way to transfer your Xdrive digital assets to another provider.
I know there are a lot of other providers out there, check out my previous post about the Ultimate Review List of Best Free Online Storage and Backup Application Services...

However XDMOlson is going to recommend selecting ElephantDrive for current Xdrive consumers. They have worked out an agreement with Xdrive to make transferring those digital assets over as easy as possible.

Just received an email from
Just received an email from AOL that they are shutting down the xdrive service all together effective in January.
You guys should definitely
You guys should definitely consider taking a look at Carbonite online backup. I've been using it for a while and its worked flawlessly. It was only 50 dollars and I backed up every file on my computer. It has been a life saver for me twice since I've gotten it, I woulda paid 5 times the price for just those 2 times. Just my two cents, but I'd check out Carbonite when looking for online backup.
If you have some digital
If you have some digital photographs, office documents and other important files that need to be backed up, try IDrive-E. You can back up 2GB of data for free with no limits on upload size. You can backup any type of files with IDrive-E.
IDrive-E automatically and safely backup data in your machine to an online location. It does incremental backups that transfer only portions of file that have changed since the last backup. The backups will be quick as IDrive-E efficiently uses your Internet bandwidth by compressing the data files during transmission. If you don’t want the application to start backups whenever the computer is idle, you can select the options provided.
IDrive-E retains 30 versions of backed up data. You can restore up to 30 prior versions, including the most recent version of your data files. IDrive-E supports backup of mapped drives in both standard and NT service mode. You can also adjust the application bandwidth and access other Internet applications without any interruptions. All data transfer operations are protected with 256-bit AES encryption.
For backups, all you need to do is to just select the files and folders and then either back them up immediately or schedule a backup for a time and frequency of your choice with the IDrive-E Classic interface. This will surely make your files safe and secure. You can also restore files backed up with this interface. The IDrive-E Explorer view is a virtual drive with a traditional Windows Explorer look and feel. The IDrive-E Explorer view is meant for restoring files and folders and is not for backups.
Xdrive is a really useful
Xdrive is a really useful solution and the fact that AOL are providing the financial ressources should make them even better in the long term. I must however mention another provider called Diino (www.diino.com). They offer a client based solution with e-mail as well. Its worth a try, but it doesnt seem an American company like Xdrive.
xdrive is totally useless
xdrive is totally useless right now. AOL have made a mess of a site which used to operate functional which has now left most of us in chaos.
AOL has not dealt with any of the major technical faults that allows users do use Xdrive and the fact that you cannot reach anyone for help say's it all.
I have been looking for another site which operates like Xdrive but cannot find anything.
My use for Xdrive is because of the music players that show up in the folders which are uploaded..no other site does this. There are thousands of storage companies but they do not offer the same facilities as Xdrive and it's a shame. I hope AOL sort out these problems asap. Xdrive was a great tool for someone like myself to share folders with clients, etc without them having to download instantly and giving them the measures to screen through what they want.
Now nothing works, i have spent hours this week trying to upload folders and every time i check back my folders dissapear, or the files contained in them have moved into the wrong folder. Nothing works!!
I would not suggest anyone use Xdrive right now!

Access to files through any Web-connected PC or mobile device

Scheduled automatic backups
Automatic upload of e-mail attachments from providers including AOL Mail, AIM Mail, or any non-AOL POP3 or IMAP-compatible mail providers

The free Xdrive service will begin in early September and will be available to anyone with an AOL account or AIM screenname.
_______________
Actually, I didn't think it was more press-releasy than the majority of postings. I also think it's not too unfair to call this an "industry leading" move, since it does have the potential to have a very big cascading effect throughout the industry. That said, AOL is hardly the first to do this -- AMD Live! offers 25GB of free space, for instance -- though they would be the first major player I've seen to offer free storage space without traffic limits (if that is, in fact, the case -- not entirely clear).

I dumped XDrive and switched
I dumped XDrive and switched to http://www.MyOtherDrive.com. Their speed is great, their service is reliable, their features are top notch, and the price for subscriptions is the best right now.
Their online backup supports unattended operation and 128-bit encryption. They have public and private file sharing. Their private sharing capability allows me to control who can see my shared files - keeps my personal photos and videos from leaking out onto the "mass" Internet.
Recently they added the ability to move and copy files between accounts. This is the bees knees! Without and upload or a download, I can add content to my account. Have not seen this anyway but on MyOtherDrive.
